British cabinet agrees 'need for action' in Syria

British Prime Minister Theresa May should continue to work with the United States and France to deter the use of chemical weapons by the Syrian government, government ministers agreed on Thursday.

The cabinet is expected to support May to join a possible military action by the USA and its allies against the Syrian regime without seeking a parliamentary approval.

Opposition Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said it is "vital that parliament has the chance to debate and decide in advance" of any military action, which he warned "risks a unsafe escalation of the conflict".

May has not reached a final decision on whether Britain would join any strikes by the United States and France in response to a suspected chemical attack, but wants to be able to act swiftly, the newspaper said.

Mrs May has said "all the indications" are that the Syrian regime of president Bashar al-Assad, which denies mounting a chemical attack, was responsible.

Action against the Syrian regime itself was ruled out in a parliamentary vote in 2013, and many MPs have called for a vote before any action this time.
