Apple plans to start making another iPhone in India

Apple iPhone 6s Plus iPhone 6s iPhone SE price cut India price

Due to government policies, producing the phone within India can cut its price by 5 to 7 percent, though Apple will need to produce India's entire demand for the model within the country to see the full savings.

Following up on a January report that Apple planned to produce cheap iPhone 6s models at a new production facility in Bengaluru, India, the country's Economic Times said today that Apple is trialing iPhone 6s Plus production, with plans to begin domestic manufacturing in two weeks.

After the iPhone SE, it looks like the iPhone 6S Plus will be the next iPhone to be made in India. The iPhone 6S Plus also has the advantage of coming in rose gold, a discontinued color for newer iPhones. The manufacturing of the 4.7-inch iPhone 6s would begin in a month or two in the plant, according to IBTimes' sources.

Apparently, it is believed that the locally produced iPhone 6s Plus can bring down prices of the phone by five to seven percent. Emails sent to Apple India and Wistron did not elicit any response as of press time Thursday. This would help in the reduction in the price of the iPhone in the Indian market.

Europa League semi-final draw: Arsenal to face Atletico Madrid
Arsenal will face Atletico Madrid in the semi-finals of the Europa League while Marseille will play Austria's FC Salzburg . Atletico were 2-1 aggregate winners against Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon in the quarter-finals to reach the semi-finals.

The decision comes after the government of India hiked custom duty on imported smartphones from 10% to 20%, leading to a price hike of iPhone devices in the country. Apple has also started discussing with its vendors and contract manufacturers like Flex, Foxconn and Wistron to expand sourcing in India. But Apple has not hiked the model's price yet.

Another way for Apple to cut additional costs would be to make parts and packaging all within India as well.

After contact manufacturer Wistron had begun assembly of iPhone SE models at its Bengaluru assembly plant previous year, it's now the turn of the more high-end iPhone 6s Plus model to take its place.

An industry executives said Salcomp is into manufacturing of chargers and adapters for iPhones, while Shenzhen YUTO Packaging manufactures packaging products.
