'Buckskin Girl' identified

Her body was found along Greenlee Road in Miami County, Ohio on April 24, 1981. The "Jane Doe" became known as "Buckskin Doe" or the "Buckskin Girl" because of that jacket. She was found clothed, wearing bell-bottom blue jeans, a brown turtleneck sweater with an orange crisscross design on the front, and a handmade tan buckskin pullover jacket with leather fringe around the seams and a deep purple lining.

The woman was found hours after she was strangled and beaten to death in April 1981, according to the Miami County sheriff's office.

Mike Ullery | AIM Media Midwest The Miami County Sheriff's Office announced on Wednesday that Jane Doe, aka "Buckskin Girl", has been positiviely identifed as Marcia L. King, 21, of Arkansas, following a almost four decade-long investigation.

An autopsy found that the young woman was killed by strangulation and blunt force trauma. Police say she was never reported as a missing person.

The sheriff's office says investigators are now focused on finding her killer.

The scientific assistance that led to the victim's identification was conducted by the DNA Doe Project, a nonprofit organization created in 2017 to apply genealogy tools to the identification of unknown persons. "After thirty-seven years, the body of the "#Buckskin Girl" has been identified.

Chief Deputy Steve Lord said King's mother has long hoped her daughter's murder would be solved. In summing up the long investigation, Sheriff Dave Duchak told the Dayton Daily News that "Law enforcement never forgets".

"They were hopeful Marcia was going to come home, however they're learning at this date that that's not going to happen", Lord said.

Investigators are focusing on the last month of King's life.

"The case has remained assigned to a detective as an active investigation since the victim was discovered", the news release states. She was known to have ties to Pittsburgh and Louisville, Ky., areas. More specifically, the DNA Doe Project, which uses the latest in forensic science to help identify unidentified murder victims, used hair and fiber samples to unveil the true identity of "Buckskin Girl".
