Syria conflict: Assad regime's runways in line of US fire

US President Donald Trump Wednesday said that "missiles will be coming" in response to an alleged chemical attack in Syria, defying Russian warnings against a strike.

Amid an argument with Russian Federation over the prospect of missile strikes, President Trump's national security team huddled Wednesday about how to respond to a reported chemical weapons attack in Syria.

"Get ready Russian Federation, because they will be coming, nice and new and 'smart!'" Mr. Trump tweeted.

Earlier, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said that the US would not rule out military force against the Assad regime.

Defense Secretary Mattis, however, indicated that evidence of what happened was still being studied.

"All the indications are that the Syrian regime was responsible", she said, adding that the United Kingdom will be working with its allies to "ensure that those who are responsible are held to account." .

"We are working with our allies".

USA officials tell The Associated Press that the allies have weighed launching a military strike as early as the end of this week.

That assault prompted the United States to launch several dozen Tomahawk cruise missiles at a Syrian air base. USA officials have been consulting with global allies on a possible joint military response to Syria's alleged poison gas attack. The jihadist group is fighting to overthrow President Bashar al-Assad's regime and establish a caliphate. As Assad leads Syria to ruin, there is no reason why his shiny and ostentatious palace should remain standing on a mountaintop above Damascus. Russia's foreign ministry said "smart rockets" should be used against terrorists, not against the legitimate government of Syria.

When Trump says "smart" missiles, he means missiles that use precision guidance systems based on lasers or satellite-powered GPS to pinpoint and strike targets with exactitude.

Virtually all USA missiles now have advanced guidance systems.

And lastly, he issued a warning to Russian Federation saying, 'Russia vows to shoot down any and all missiles fired at Syria. As U.S. officials continue to assess the situation on the ground, President Trump took to his favorite social media site, unleashing a string of insults and military threats against Assad and Syrian supporters in Russian Federation.

Worldwide airlines said on Wednesday they were modifying their flight plans after a warning from Europe's air safety watchdog about potential military strikes on Syria in the coming days.

Earlier, French President Emmanuel Macron gave the impression that a final decision on a potential retaliatory target would not be made for a few days. Should the approval be granted, the operation could be launched "within hours".

Mattis did not answer a question about whether he was concerned about telegraphing USA moves in Syria. Multiple IS terror attacks have targeted France, including one last month. At least 40 people died during the bombing on Saturday (Apr. 7, ) according to rescue workers and other observers who blame the Syrian government forces.

At other periods later in the day, there were no flights using the airspace.

That official was not authorized to speak publicly and commented only on condition of anonymity.

USA officials have consulted with global allies on a possible joint military response to Syria's alleged poison gas attack on a rebel-held town.

One way to ensure Assad can not use such weapons is to conduct strikes on his chemical infrastructure, including by targeting factories and weapons holding areas.

Another pleads: "President Obama, do not attack Syria".

Trump spoke by phone with British Prime Minister Theresa May.

More than 48 hours since President Trump signaled imminent military action in response to a reported Syrian chemical weapons attack, any element of "surprise" has always been lost.

The Syrian government said its invitation to the worldwide chemical weapons watchdog to send a fact-finding mission to the country is "proof" that Damascus is innocent and has not used chemical weapons.
