Israeli ministers defend soldiers filmed cheering as sniper shoots Palestinian in Gaza

Force F-15 fighter jet releases flares during an aerial demonstration at a graduation ceremony for Israeli air force pilots at the Hatzerim air base in southern Israel

As the world watches the thousands-strong demonstrations at Gaza's border with Israel, images and videos that have emerged since the protests began have sparked fresh debate about Israel's use of force against Palestinians.

It said the soldiers involved in the filming will be dealt with. The IDF has said that they are still investigating the matter.

The Palestinian national unity government on Tuesday urged the International Criminal Court (ICC) to launch an immediate investigation into "Israeli war crimes and crimes against humanity" of killing Palestinians.

Abu Daqqa said he had thrown stones at Israeli soldiers over the border during the day, but denied being armed or posing any threat at the time of the gunshot.

It said the video "depicts a short part of the response to a violent riot", and "a single bullet" was sacked after other attempts to stop the violence had failed.

Palestinian health officials say at least 31 people have been killed by Israeli fire, including 25 people killed during protests.

Track Meets Moved to Thursday
The 4x400-meter relay team of Ryan Wolgram, Engle, Watts and Wasson recorded a time of 3:54.74, taking fourth. On the girls' side, Stormi Lane raced in to win the 100 dash (12.56) and 200 dash (26.25).

For Israelis and Palestinians, the video was a reminder of another one from March 2016 that showed an Israeli soldier shooting dead a prone Palestinian assailant.

Ayman Odeh, a senior MK from Israel's Palestinian minority, called for the sniper to be put on trial. In order to safeguard that independence voice, we are proud to count you, our readers, as our most important supporters.

In a statement by the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO), chief negotiator Dr Saeb Erekat called the video "a reflection of the cruel mentality of Israel's military occupation and the drive of its systematic shoot-to-kill policy against the Palestinian civilians". There have been no Israeli casualties.

At the funeral Saturday, Murtaja's body was draped in a Palestinian flag with his flak jacket reading "press" placed upon it as it was carried through the streets of Gaza. But large groups of youths have ventured considerably nearer, burning tyres last Friday to create a smokescreen to obscure the view of Israeli snipers.

But two of those justifications - spotting "instigators" and detecting damage to the fence - are in violation of worldwide human rights law, which restricts the use of firearms to "cases of extreme necessity, as a last resort, and in response to an imminent threat of death or risk of serious injury".

The border fence between the Palestinian enclave and Israel has become the backdrop of mass Gaza demonstrations that lead to deadly clashes. "The United States strongly urges protest leaders to communicate loudly and clearly that protestors should march peacefully; should abstain from all forms of violence; should remain outside the 500-meter buffer zone; and should not approach the border fence in any way or any location", he wrote.
