It was not clear what role Cohen, 51, might have played in regards to the recording, but sources said the federal search warrant for his Rockefeller Center office seeks any evidence that Cohen tried to suppress damaging information about Trump during the campaign.

One of the sources said the warrant also referenced an investigation into wire fraud and bank fraud.

Investigators also sought records related to Cohen's interactions with Trump campaign officials during the 2016 election cycle, according to the sources.

The warrant also covered emails and other documents that could reveal Cohen's private communications with Trump during a tense period in the presidential campaign.

The brand new details out of the merit show that prosecutors are keenly thinking about Mr. Cohen's unofficial role in the Trump effort.

Michael Cohen's office was raided by investigators Monday morning.

News of the "Access Hollywood" documents being sought was first reported by The New York Times.

Trump was the star of "The Apprentice" when he was caught on a hot microphone bragging to Billy Bush, then the host of "Access Hollywood", about how his fame enabled him to kiss women and "grab them by the p-y".

The 39-year-old X-rated actress is now battling Trump and Cohen in court over a nondisclosure agreement she says should be nulled because Trump never signed it. Cohen owns at least 32 medallions and has failed to pay the mandatory dues on them in several cases, according to state Department of Taxation and Finance records.

"These government tactics are also wrong because Mr. Cohen has cooperated completely with all government entities", said Stephen Ryan, Cohen's Washington-based attorney. Trump has denied their accusations.

The agents reportedly were looking for files relating to ongoing questions about Trump's relationship with porn star Stormy Daniels and why Cohen apparently paid her $130,000 to keep silent about an alleged affair. He has been directing his anger, in part, at U.S. Justice Department special counsel Robert Mueller, whose office contacted the U.S. attorney in Manhattan after making a discovery of possible illegal activity that falls outside the scope of his Russian Federation election meddling investigation.

Cohen delivered a one-word rebuke when a News reporter asked him Wednesday afternoon if he was anxious about the hefty taxi debt.

"No Collusion or Obstruction (other than I fight back), so now they do the Unthinkable, and RAID a lawyers office for information!" The president had been planning to make a decision this week about whether to talk with Mueller's team.

It is unknown how many people at NBC had access to the tape.
