President Trump Threatens to Strike Syria Over Chemical Weapons Attack

The PM said the attack in Douma was part of a "troubling wider pattern of acts of aggression" and abuse of worldwide norms on the use of chemical weapons.

"It is necessary to warn once again that military intervention under far-fetched and fabricated pretexts in Syria, where the Russian servicemen are deployed at the request of the legitimate government, is absolutely unacceptable and might lead to very severe consequences", the statement said.

According to activist groups, helicopters dropped barrel bombs filled with toxic gas on the town situated on the outskirts of the capital Damascus, killing dozens of civilians and wounding scores more.

"If the red line [of chemical weapons use] has been crossed, there will be a response", French government spokesman Benjamin Griveaux said.

Worldwide bodies led by the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) were trying to establish exactly what happened in Douma, a rebel-held town in the eastern Ghouta district.

Israel and Russia have coordinated their military actions over Syria for deconfliction since Russian forces entered the country in late 2015.

The Russian ambassador to the UN then warned the United States that it would be better for them "not to undertake any plans they plan to undertake, because Russia will respond adequately".

Meanwhile, President Trump says the White House will be making a decision on Syria in the next day or two, saying the reported attack was "atrocious" and "can't be allowed to happen".

"There was no chemical weapons attack", said Russian U.N. Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia during a U.N. Security Council meeting held on Monday.

Mr Nebenzia accused the U.S. of "planting this resolution" as a "pretext" to justify military action.

United States envoy Nikki Haley responded by calling the vote a "travesty".

French President Emmanuel Macron was quick to engage with the White House, which announced that US will be coordinating with France on a response, military or otherwise.

"We have reached the moment when the world must see justice done", Ms Haley told the Council.

In a statement, McCain said Trump "responded decisively" previous year with the air strike and urged Trump to be forceful again to "demonstrate that Assad will pay a price for his war crimes". "And if he does it's going to be very tough, very tough". Washington bombed a Syrian government air base a year ago over a toxic gas attack.

None of the three countries' leaders had made a firm decision, according to the officials, who were not authorized to discuss military planning publicly. A Navy destroyer, the USS Donald Cook, got underway in the eastern Mediterranean on Monday after completing a port call in Cyprus.

Meanwhile, global chemical weapons experts are expected to go to Douma to investigate a suspected poison gas attack. The regime and Russian Federation denied such an attack ever took place, whereas the USA, the U.K., France, Germany and neighboring Turkey said that they strongly suspect that the attack was carried out by the regime.

Trump said there was little question that Syria was responsible for the apparent weekend attack, although the government of President Bashar Assad denied it.
