PlayStation 5 likely won't arrive until 2020

He has deduced that even though Sony has said nothing about the console, developers usually have some idea about imminent launches.

It's worth noting that hardware dates can change frequently however, with one source noting, 'On a multi-year project, a lot can happen to shift schedules both forward and backward'. The devs are the first to find out any such news because they need to start making games for the console. At some point, Sony's probably looked at every possible date.

Conversations with developers aside, it's hard to imagine Sony or Microsoft moving on to new consoles so soon after debuting new hardware in the form of the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X. Sony launched the PS4 Pro less than a year and a half ago, and it's much more significant than just a makeover like the PS3 received late in its life cycle. Another close source to Sony also noted that if the PS5 was due out this year, it would already be in mass production, which would come as a shock to those now working on the PS4's roster for 2018. Two people "directly familiar" with Sony's plans told him that there was no chance of the PS5 releasing in 2018.

A 2020 release matches secondhand rumors Schreier heard at the Game Developers Conference this year. Even developers at Sony's first-party studios had not been briefed on the existence of the PS5 yet, and these are the developers now working on games scheduled for 2019 and later.

Last week, SemiAccurate claimed that Sony had shipped a large number of PS5 development kits to game developers. And they themselves believe that a 2020 release seems most realistic.

It has been five years since the arrival of the PlayStation 4 in 2013, which was launched seven years after the PlayStation 3 was rolled out in 2006. That was followed by a potential leak of the specs of the PlayStation 5 which reportedly said that the console would launch in 2018 or 2019.

The PlayStation 4 Pro came out in November 2016, and Xbox One X released in November past year.
