- Demonstrators came to nation's capital to protest against Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg as he was grilled by Senate lawmakers for about five hours Tuesday.

In the hearings, Zuckerberg is trying to both restore public trust in his company and stave off federal regulations that some lawmakers have floated.

Since the scandal broke Zuckerberg has said there will be new policies moving forward which will place greater restrictions on exactly how external apps collect data and where it goes once they've got it. "And I'm sorry", he said.

The company has since rolled out a number of features, including tools that tell users whether their account was used by Cambridge Analytica, and other functions meant to make it easier for users to see what third-party accounts have access to their information.

Facebook disclosed in September that Russians under fake names used the social network to try to influence USA voters in the months before and after the 2016 election, writing about inflammatory subjects, setting up events and buying ads.

Ahead of the hearing, John Cornyn of Texas, the No. 2 Republican in the Senate, said, "This is a serious matter, and I think people expect us to take action".
