FTC: "Warranty Void If Removed" stickers are illegal

Watch out for this common — but ‘illegal — warranty language

The FTC hasn't named the firms but a company that has been criticized over the years for restrictions on third-party screen replacements is Apple.

At this time we do not know the six companies that've been sent the letter of warning from the FTC. These stickers serve a objective for companies who do not want you putzing around with their goods. Yes, you expected them whenever you purchased a new device, but there's some new information regarding them. Or, in a more dire situation, replaces the brakes with some off-brand ones, which then fail and cause an accident.

It's wouldn't be impossible to guess which six companies are under fire, as mentioned that Apple, Microsoft, and Sony are some of the biggest offenders with the latter two smothering their respective Xbox and PlayStation gaming system in false warnings.

The biggest piece of legislation up for debate is the 1975 Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, which the commission cited in its letter, that basically claims companies can't put fix restrictions on their products unless they provide the parts or services for free or receive a waiver from the FTC.

Trump cancels overseas trip to address Syria threat
Mattis had been asked if the USA was capable of striking President Syrian President Bashar Assad's chemical weapons facilities. The opposition blamed president Bashar Assad's forces for the attack, accusations the government strongly denies.

The agency gave several examples of offending language in customer agreements, blanking out the names of the companies. The FTC cites the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, which in 1975 determined that manufacturers can not restrict repairs on devices which come with warranties, and the FTC Act. In addition, such statements might also be considered deceptive under the FTC Act.

Hyundai USA now insists "the use of Hyundai Genuine Parts is required to keep your Hyundai manufacturer's warranties and any extended warranties intact", while Nintendo sees no problem voiding otherwise valid warranties if some of its gaming devices are "used with products not sold or licensed by Nintendo".

This warranty shall not apply if this product.is used with products not sold or licensed by [company name].

Companies can't put warranty stickers on their products and claim the warranty is void if you remove the sticker, the FTC says. The companies have 30 days to modify their policies. These stickers are often used to discourage consumers from performing DIY repairs, or going through third-party services.
