Facebook to run only verified political ads ahead of elections in Pakistan

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg will testify in front of a Congressional panel on April 11

This is just the latest of a number of changes announced by Facebook this week.

The legislation would also require online platforms to make "all reasonable efforts" to ensure that foreign nationals and entities are not buying political ads to influence the United States electorate.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg will testify before Congress next week, while an European Union official plans to speak with Facebook's No. 2 executive, Sheryl Sandberg, over the company's data practices. It seemed to have been done without explicit consent, though Facebook says it only collected such data from Android users who specifically allowed it to do so - for instance, by agreeing to permissions when installing Facebook. Facebook had it turned on by default. "That, to me, was the failure".

Authorities around the world are investigating allegations that the political data-mining firm Cambridge Analytica inappropriately accessed data on as many as 87 million Facebook users to influence elections.

Over the past few weeks, the scandal has mushroomed into investigations across continents, including a probe by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission. The two sessions will be his first testimony before Congress.

"The FTC looked the other way for years when consumer groups told them Facebook was violating its 2011 deal to better protect its users".

Facebook's stock has fallen about 14 percent since the Cambridge Analytica story broke, more than the rest of the stock market has fallen.

Neither Zuckerberg nor his company has identified those who carried out the data scraping. Outside experts believe they could have been identity thieves, scam artists or shady data brokers assembling marketing profiles.

Although the data was openly given by Facebook to the university researcher, the company has said that this was legitimate and that only its further transfer to Cambridge Analytics was illicit.

In his call with reporters Wednesday, Zuckerberg said the company had tried "rate limiting" the searches.

BP teams up with Tesla to venture into battery storage for windfarm
In related news, VP John Douglas Field sold 1,000 shares of the business's stock in a transaction dated Thursday, February 15th. Finally, Tigress Financial reissued a "hold" rating on shares of Tesla in a research report on Thursday, December 21st.

The location of those affected has been identified. But Zuckerberg said the scrapers circumvented that defense by cycling through multiple IP addresses.

And it has renewed questions about Facebook's ability to protect the privacy of its users while also exploiting their personal details to fuel its lucrative advertising business.

The research project would then determine whether the combined data could improve patient care.

In February, U.S. Special Counsel Robert Mueller charged 13 Russians and three Russian companies with interfering in the election by sowing discord on social media.

Privacy advocates have always been critical of Facebook's penchant for pushing people to share more and more information, often through pro-sharing default options.

"Election interference is a problem that's bigger than any one platform, and that's why we support the Honest Ads Act", Zuckerberg wrote in a Facebook post on Friday.

The company has tried to simplify its settings multiple times over the years, most recently this week.

Facebook said the work had "not progressed past the planning phase" and said it had "not received, shared or analysed anyone's data".

"We will now be making a broader delete message feature available".

"For example, on Messenger, when you send a photo, our automated systems scan it using photo matching technology to detect known child exploitation imagery or when you send a link, we scan it for malware or viruses", a Facebook Messenger spokeswoman said in a statement to Bloomberg.
