Cameroon athletes go missing from Commonwealth Games

The Commonwealth Games has failed to deliver on an expected economic boom frustrating business owners who are struggling amid dwindling sales as the Gold Coast becomes a'ghost town

Team South Africa's netballers gave the Rainbow Nation something to cheer about after they thrashed Barbados 85-25 in a Pool A match at the Commonwealth Games on Australia's Gold Coast on Wednesday morning.

"I don't think they will be back", Cameroon's Molombe told CNN Sport, confirming their disappearance had been reported to Australian police.

It is not the first time athletes have disappeared during major sporting events.

Reacting to the budding home-based athletes selected to represent Nigeria at the Games, Fasuba said it was a good idea to expose them.

The Cameroonian athletes are nowhere according to reports meanwhile; they have valid visas until May 15, allowing them to spend another month legally in Australia.

Grevemberg warned, however, that they would take the matter "very seriously" if they were found to have broken the regulations.

Simon Molombe, Cameroon's press oficer, spoke of how shocked he was by the actions of boxers Christian Ndzie Tsoye and Simplice Fotsala alongside weightlifters Olivier Matam Matam, Arcangeline Fouodji and Petit Minkoumba.

There was heartache for Forth-based boxing ace Scott Forrest on Tuesday when he was knocked out at the Commonwealth Games 91kg heavyweight quarter-final stage.

"We need to make sure that we are efficient against the Australians as we might not get too many chances because they are a strong team", said the skipper.

"If they are thinking of doing anything other, I would encourage them not to do it". The 23-year-old said, "We had a tough start to the tournament here but the girls chose to work hard on the errors that we made in our opening match".

'It's obviously disappointing that some of the athletes that have come, didn't compete, ' Grevemberg said.

It comes after Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton took the extraordinary step of warning athletes against trying to overstay their visas.

"The (athletes') village is really nice, seeing other sports, meeting new people".

In 2012, five Cameroonian male boxers, a female footballer and a male swimmer absconded from the London Olympic village.

"Right now we are anxious about safety and welfare of the athletes and we are taking this very seriously and monitoring the situation with team Cameroon".

Organising committee manager Peter Beattie urged the athletes to return and implored them not to disregard laws that are in place.
