Beware! WhatsApp Sharing Your Digital Payments Data With Facebook

Events API

According to a circular by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), the banks associated with third-party payment apps like WhatsApp and PhonePe need to get exclusive permission from NPCI before they share customer data.

"WhatsApp collects very little data and every message is end-to-end encrypted".

WhatsApp has officially said that it might share payment information of users with its parent company Facebook. They said that we are not collecting any information except some data and all the messages users sends are end to end encrypted.

However these claims are disputed by Vivek Wadhwa, a tech entrepreneur and academic who told the PTI, "One-to-one communication between users are encrypted and may be as secure as WhatsApp claims". The WhatsApp payments feature is based on the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) platform, and the option is still on a trial.

A group of Facebook users is planning a massive boycott of the app for 24 hours on Wednesday when Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg will testify before Congress on data privacy.

It should be noted that WhatsApp introduced end-to-end encryption across the app in April 2016. "Contrary to recent comments in the media, we are not keeping track of the friends and family you have messaged", he added. Group members can always see everyone in the group including their phone number and their name. In 2014 Facebook acquired this trending app. It's Facebook's responsibility to manage their platform, but it's also the responsibility of governments to ensure companies protect data and to regulate monopolies."-Laura Ullman, spokeswoman, Operation Faceblock". The social messaging company rolled out the feature to some of the users in February.

To carry out payments, WhatsApp needs to collect certain user information - specifically, payment transaction information. This means that if WhatsApp messages are deleted from a user's account, they can not be recovered either, because the company is not storing these on its servers.
