Senior Russian leaders have warned of retaliation if Mr Trump orders the U.S. missile strikes to go ahead.

The ruble has been hit hard following the warning from Donald Trump that Moscow should "get ready" for missiles to be fired into Syria. "Get ready Russian Federation, because they will be coming, nice and new and 'smart!'" Trump tweeted on Wednesday.

Defying Russian warnings against US military strikes in Syria, President Donald Trump said Wednesday that missiles "will be coming" in response to Syria's suspected chemical attack that killed at least 40 people.

The term "smart" missile dates to the introduction decades ago of weapons with advanced guidance systems - for example, using GPS - to achieve greater precision in targeting. "Or is the whole idea to quickly cover-up the traces of provocation through the smart missiles so the worldwide inspectors have nothing to look for as far as evidence?"
