Suspicious package sent to MP Rupa Huq

The Labour MP Mohammad Yasin won his Bedford seat at the general election last year

Muslim MPs have been sent threatening letters which urge people to carry out acid attacks against Muslims, bomb mosques and pull off hijabs.

Yasin won his Bedford seat from the Conservatives by 789 votes at the last general election.

The letter has reportedly been received in locations including Bradford, Leicester, London, Cardiff and Sheffield.

Just last month Amber Rudd had white powder sent to her office in Parliament, and police deployed counter-terror officers to look into it.

"This government wants to give a strong message to Muslim people across this country... we are committed to their safety and security", said Victoria Atkins, a Home Office Minister, in Parliament following an urgent question from Labour MP Yasmin Qureshi in Parliament calling for clarity on the government's strategy for tackling the rising issue of Islamophobia. "Someone out there thinks it is open season on Muslims", said Huq, who represents Ealing central and Acton in south-west London.

A member of Huq's staff has been taken to hospital as a precaution after opening the letter, which the MP told the Guardian was a "sticky substance" and the police had described as "low-level noxious". "It is to put the frighteners on us but we won't be cowed".

All four of the packages sent to MPs have been found in the Norman Shaw north building in the parliamentary estate, which is linked by a walkway to Portcullis House. All other packages received so far were deemed not to be harmful. It released a statement, saying: "It is essential that all letters and envelopes are kept and handled minimally to preserve evidence for the police to investigate".

The package is being assessed by specialist officers, according to the police.

A second suspicious packaged in as many days has been found at Westminster, with one person hospitalised as a result.

The spokesman said there were no reported injuries and inquiries were continuing.

The Metropolitan Police spokesperson said they do not "tolerate hate crime", and added: "Anyone believes they have been a victim of such an offence we would encourage them to report it to police so it can be fully investigated".

'The incident, which was contained to one room, is in the process of being stood down'.
