Raiders to release CB Smith after guilty plea in assault case

Oakland Raiders head coach Jon Gruden

The Raiders also released starting right tackle Marshall Newhouse?on Monday.

Shortly after first reports of his release Monday morning, the Los Angeles Times reported Smith will plead guilty this week to a felony count of assault with great bodily injury relating to an altercation past year in Pasadena. The victim stated that Smith drank copious amounts of tequila before he was assaulted in an incident that involved Smith's sister. Two witnesses testified during a preliminary hearing in December that Smith stomped Woods' head as he lay bleeding and unconscious.

"He's pleased that [Smith] is admitting guilt, but the sentence is light,"Woods' attorney Jonathan Dennis said of the plea bargain".

Smith's departure has plenty to do with his salary, shaving a whopping $8.5 million off the books for 2018.

Police said they have reclassified that investigation as a homicide, and can not rule out that the two explosions aren't related. Austin Fire, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the FBI are assisting with the investigation.

Still, given the Raiders' subpar cornerbacks group, Smith was probably the best one among them the second half of the season. He allowed opposing quarterbacks to post a 116.5 passer rating when targeting him in 2016, according to SportRadar.

"Nothing has changed on my end", Smith told ESPN the last week of the season. He said he was only on the field in certain packages early in the season and could not get into the flow of a game as a result.

The Oakland Raiders have released veteran cornerback Sean Smith. Amerson later signed with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Oakland will again seek to bolster the secondary in free agency, looking for a starter at cornerback to pair with last year's first-round pick Gareon Conley. Plus, Carrie is a free agent. His 32 tackles a year ago matched the fewest since his 2009 rookie season with Miami.
