Trump presses European Union on trade barriers in tit-for-tat

Mr. Trump's steel and aluminum tariff taxes won't increase manufacturing jobs; they will reduce them.

In a statement posted on the website of the China Iron and Steel Association, the group appealed to the government in Beijing "to take resolute measures against imports of some US products, including stainless steel, galvanized sheet, seamless pipe, coal, agriculture products and electronic products".

Sparwasser said Canada, along with other European countries, including Germany, have benefited from the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement with the European Union that was signed in 2016, as "a way to balance" countries' trade interests.

The American president made his comments after crunch talks in Brussels between European Union negotiators and US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer in an effort to defuse a bitter row that many fear could turn into an all-out trade war. Trump has linked the tariffs with ongoing NAFTA negotiations. "We work together. We can not possibly be a threat to national security in the USA, so we are counting on being excluded", she said.

Brazil, which after Canada is the biggest steel supplier to the U.S. market, said it wanted to join the exemption list, and Argentina made a similar case.

The Aluminium Association of Canada fired off its missive, stating that Canada has helped maintain USA supplies without taking advantage of the US decline in production. A hit to Canada's steel industry would be felt by other sectors, too.

The head of the United Steelworkers, Leo Gerard, who happens to be Canadian, reminded Trump that Canadian aluminum is a strategic good for USA military procurement.

"I think this would be bad for Americans overall and reduce our economic potential over time, which had been boosted by the tax cuts past year and the regulatory reforms that were made", Ginn told WND and Radio America. "Many Americans have also opened trade companies in China", said Kevin, who wouldn't give his last name.

"I will seek more clarity on this issue in the days to come", Malmström said, adding that she would discuss the issues with United States Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer on Saturday in Brussels.

Mulroney said that Republicans in Congress are putting "enormous pressure" on Trump to abandon the tariffs, and Canada should wait and see what happens over the next week.

When Beijing launched a probe last month into imports of USA sorghum, a grain used in animal feed and liquor, it was viewed as a warning shot that Beijing was ready to target farm states that voted for Trump.

Canada is the largest supplier of both steel and aluminum to the US.

Yesterday, Speaker of the House Paul Ryan called on Trump to drop plans for the new tariffs.

"Imposing such measures on U.S. allies in the name of national security is hard to comprehend", Gareth Stace added. Moreover, there is a risk, albeit slight, that imposing tariffs could set off a beggar-thy-neighbor trade war.

The government will also make concerted efforts with trade promotion agencies and state-run utility firms to diversify the export market while pushing for large infrastructure projects to boost domestic consumption of steel products.

The peso also strengthened following the tariff announcement.

One EU official said it was a "very, very conservative" approach that stayed firmly within what is allowed under the WTO's agreement on trade safeguards.
