Waymo launching self-driving truck pilot to Atlanta

On Friday, Waymo said it was starting to test self-driving trucks on highways and city streets around Atlanta.

Waymo began testing its autonomous trucks during trials in California and Arizona and is ready to expands those trials in high-profile way. All the data garnered from those miles, together with the software and sensors that power the company's autonomous cars and minivans, is now also being put to use for trucks. Though the goal is for the truck to drive itself, there will be a driver in the cab to monitor systems and take over if there's an emergency.

A Waymo spokeswoman declined to say how many trucks will be tested.

So, as Waymo said, be sure to keep a beady eye out for the self-driving trucks if you're a resident of Atlanta. The principles are the same, but things like braking, turning, and blind spots are different with a fully-loaded truck and trailer. And our engineers and AI experts are leveraging the same five million miles we've already self-driven on public roads, plus the five billion miles we've driven in simulation.

Now we're headed to Georgia.

Google's Waymo has been testing autonomous vehicles for quite some time, so it's taking the next logical step by shifting the technology over to trucks.

Commercial trucking is seen as one of the biggest areas of opportunity for self-driving technology.

"Trucking is a vital part of the American economy, and we believe self-driving technology has the potential to make this sector safer and even stronger", the company said in a blog post.

The latest installment, coming on the heels of a settled lawsuit between the two tech giants, involves self-driving truck testing.
