White House softens tone on gun-control measures after Trump meets with NRA

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer D-N.Y. introduces a three-point plan on guns that's supported by the Democratic Caucus during a news conference at the Capitol in Washington Thursday

They unveiled a more ambitious priority list, with expanded background checks and even a politically risky ban on assault weapons.

Cornyn, who sat beside Trump during his free-flowing, televised meeting on Wednesday, told reporters he believes his modest proposal to improve the background check system for gun buyers was more pragmatic than the more ambitious approach Trump appeared to back.

A day later, with Republicans still trying to make sense of the president's preferences, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said he will shelve gun legislation for now.

Mr Trump also raised eyebrows by suggesting that law-enforcement officials should be able to confiscate people's firearms without a court order in order to prevent potential tragedies.

"Take the guns first, go through due process second", he suggested at the time. It was not clear whether he would continue to push for swift and significant changes to gun laws, when confronted with the inevitable resistance from his party. Democratic lawmakers appealed to the president to use his political power to persuade his party to take action.

"He surprised me", Democratic Senator Chris Murphy later told AFP.

Democratic Senator Chris Murphy of CT warned Trump against underestimating the NRA, blaming it for foiling previous efforts to tighten gun laws.

Cornyn's bill, which has bipartisan support, would offer incentives to federal and state agencies to file already required reports with the FBI's National Instant Criminal Background Check System, known as NICS, to block ineligible gun purchasers with felonies or unsafe mental illness.

"I think because of the president's extraordinarily close relationship with the [National Rifle Association] and his enormous credibility with base GOP voters on this issue, particularly strong in rural areas, I think he has the opportunity to get something done", he said. "We have to stop this nonsense".

Americans pay respects to Billy Graham at US Capitol: 'I love him'
The Trumps then joined McConnell and Ryan in placing wreaths at each corner of Graham's casket before the service's benediction. John Kennedy has co-sponsored legislation honoring evangelist Billy Graham , who died February 21 at the age of 99.

"We all want safe schools, mental health reform and to keep guns away from risky people", Cox tweeted.

Mr Beigel was one of three staff killed, along with 14 teenagers, when former student Nikolas Cruz entered the school on Valentine's Day and opened fire with a semi-automatic rifle.

In a tweet, Chris Cox says the two "don't want gun control". Trump, he said, is not the one who is going to come up with a plan. Yesterday, it was announced that he will meet with members of the video game industry to curb the issue. He's going to put together a bill to present to Congress that will be, in his words, "beautiful".

House and Senate Republicans have been talking about boosting school safety resources, and House Speaker Paul Ryan has mentioned that effort.

Miller's question also comes after today's decision by lawmakers to move on from considering any gun legislation in favor of discussing unrelated banking measures. "By far", Trump said of the Toomey-Manchin bill, which drew 54 votes in 2013 and six fewer when it got another shot on the Senate floor in 2015.

And at least one Democratic senator, Richard Blumenthal of CT, said Democrats might seek to block a stand-alone Fix NICS bill because it does not go far enough. "Maybe you change the title, all right?" But Trump said the opposite on Wednesday.

That didn't take long.

On Wednesday, when told by Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., does not address the age minimum.

She insisted, though, that this support did "not necessarily [mean] universal background checks" and also threw cold water on Trump's statements that he supported raising the age limit to buy an assault weapon to 21.
