Some analysts said President Vladimir Putin's statements about the new weapons may speed up what they see as an emerging arms race with the US.

Discussing Syria in a phone conversation, Chancellor Angela Merkel and U.S. President Donald Trump called for an immediate and full implementation of the United Nations cease-fire, her spokesman said on Friday.

Analysts said that Putin who is all but guaranteed to win a fourth Kremlin term in March 18 elections was effectively challenging Washington to a new arms race.

She was commenting on Putin's nation speech featured video montages of missiles crossing mountains and oceans, though the Kremlin later insisted the maps used did not represent any actual countries.

In an annual address to the Russian Parliament on Thursday, Putin said Russia had developed a new, nuclear-capable cruise missile with "unlimited" range that is capable of eluding air-defense systems.

Putin's speech has further exacerbated tensions with the United States, which have hit Cold War-era highs over conflict in Syria and Ukraine as well as accusations Moscow interfered in the U.S. 2016 election.

"It was certainly unfortunate to have watched the video animation that depicted a nuclear attack on the United States", spokeswoman Heather Nauert told reporters.

Seoul urges USA to loosen demands if North Korea talks to start
The delegation, which included North Korea leader Kim Jong Un's sister, Kim Yo Jong, held talks with the leadership of the South. Plus, North Korea has a history of putting all inter-Korean related issues on ice during the two months of drills.

The Pentagon spoke about Putin's display on Thursday, assuring, "We've been watching Russian Federation for a long time". "Russia still has the greatest nuclear potential in the world, but nobody listened to us".

The State Department expressed outrage at Putin's presentation and his "cheesy" animated video of warheads over U.S. soil-and said the Russian leader had confirmed long-held allegations about his program.

Footage used by Vladimir Putin to boast about his new "unstoppable" nuclear missile was first used in a TV documentary a decade ago.

Russian Federation is also concerned by the US-led alliance's missile defence system in Europe, which it sees as a provocation, though North Atlantic Treaty Organisation rejects the criticism.

Putin claimed his new weapons will render USA and European defences useless, suggesting an escalation of the stakes in a long-running struggle for stability in the post-Cold War world.

Some have already interpreted it as an official declaration of a renewed Cold War.

And naming the stealth atomic-powered cruise missile after a Russian folk musical instrument tapped into a long Russian tradition of giving innocuous names to some of the deadliest weapons.
