Dutch supermarket launches plastic-free aisles

Launching at the supermarket's Amsterdam store, more than 700 food items and other goods with recyclable packaging are included in the aisle - all of which bear the "plastic free" mark.

Irrespective of how much is spent on improving Britain's recycling infrastructure, nearly all plastic waste will make the transition from the economy to the environment sooner or later.

Earlier this year, a Guardian investigation revealed that United Kingdom supermarkets were a major source of plastic waste, producing 1m tonnes a year.

"This is not tokenism", insists Sian Sutherland, co-founder of campaign group A Plastic Planet and a partner in the.

Sutherland added that shoppers have been "sold the lie" for decades that we can't live without plastic containers for food and drinks. "Our biggest supermarkets must introduce plastic-free aisles urgently". "Right now we have no choice".

Dutch supermarket chain Ekoplaza has placed itself on the leading edge of a global movement to banish plastics after introducing what it describes as the world's first plastic-free aisle.

Maryland weather: 65000 without power amid wind storm
In addition to the high winds, accumulating snow is possible in western Maryland Thursday night into Friday. The National Weather Service issued a high wind warning in effect through 6:00 A.M. on Saturday.

Ekoplaza hopes the store within a store, known as the Ekoplaza lab, will be a success and that it can roll it out nationwide by the end of this year.

"Plastic-free aisles are an important steppingstone to a brighter future for food and drink", Ekoplaza chief executive Erik Does in a statement, according to the Post. News of the world's first plastic-free aisle - a collaboration between environmental campaigners, a supermarket chain, and suppliers - does, however, suggest that the consumer demand for more environmentally-friendly products is growing.

A huge breadth of plastic-free products are included in the pilot, ranging from meat and dairy to fresh fruit and vegetables. If items are packaged at all, it will be with metal, glass, cardboard, or compostable materials. "Plastic food and drink packaging remains useful for a matter of days yet remains a destructive presence on the earth for centuries afterwards".

Plastic packaging has become so widespread as a result of its convenience and qualities of hygiene.

Plastic free aisles have attracted political support too.

The Guardian's investigation into supermarkets' plastic footprint found that leading United Kingdom stores create more than 800,000 tonnes of plastic packaging waste every year. In her first major speech on the environment last month, Theresa May backed decisive action to tackle plastic waste generated by the grocery retail sector.
