New iOS bug can crash any iPhone with a single Indian character

Some apps such as Skype and Telegram have been reported to be unaffected by the latest bug.

iPhone owners, brace yourself for yet another bug that pranksters and other ne'er-do-wells can use to crash your iPhone and block access to messaging apps like iMessage and even third-party apps like Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, and Gmail. Though iOS 11.3 will include the bug fix, Apple will release an urgent update before iOS 11.3 to fix the Telugu character bug. Once the message has been sent and received, Apple's iOS Springboard will crash.

"The character in question can cause serious problems and, in nearly all our tests, after the Springboard crash the iPhone went into bootloop and we had to perform a reset from DFU [Device Firmware Upgrade] mode", the report from Mobile World said, referring to a specific character in the Telugu language from India. The bug also affects platforms other than the iPhone, such as the Apple Watch. To be precise it is a character of the Telugu language, a Central-Southern Dravidian language spoken in India by about 70 million people (from about 5% of the Indian population therefore). Called the chaiOS, the bug exploited the fact that Apple's Messages app preloads any links in messages to show users a preview of the webpage. You just need to go to the trouble of installing iOS beta 11.3, which addresses the problem, along with all current betas of macOS, tvOS, and watchOS.

The Verge further suggests that the issue has also been resolved in the public beta of iOS 11.3.

A character from an Indian dialect is at the heart of a new bug concerning all of Apple's operating systems. Open the message, tap the back arrow in the top-left corner of the display, then delete the thread containing the Telugu character.

A similar issue also plagued iPhones in 2016, when it was discovered that a corrupt video file could be used to cause iPhones to freeze up and forced users to reboot the device to make it function again.

The most recent bug in iOS 11 and macOS High Sierra allows one to send a specific character to crash the devices.
