Kia Ceed is live ahead of Geneva introduction

Kia Ceed is live ahead of Geneva introduction

The ride and handling characteristics of the new model promise to elevate the Ceed over its predecessor in terms of dynamism and driver engagement.

While Kia Australia is planning a June launch for its restyled, Stinger-cloned Cerato sedan, potential buyers will have to wait until the fourth quarter to purchase the new hatchback version of the same nameplate. "The new model will reinforce and build upon these strengths". Its new engines and suspension will make it more enjoyable and engaging to drive, and will continue to offer the same high quality that customers expect from Kia.

The engine line-up will also be new, and will include a 140hp 1.4-litre T-GDi petrol engine and an efficient new 1.6-litre diesel.

First things first - the name change was called for by virtually everyone, and Kia has even found a way to justify it, claiming the name Ceed now stands for "Community of Europe, with European Design".

The infotainment system is available with five- or deven-inch touchscreen audio system, or 8.0-inch touchscreen navigation system. Standard technologies include full Bluetooth smartphone integration, as well as automatic lights and keyless entry.

A Drive Mode Select system meanwhile will enable drivers to tailor their experience behind the wheel, with Normal and Sport modes.

The body is also stiffer and an enhanced electric power steering system is claimed to return more road feel to the driver.

The Ceed will be the first Kia to offer "level two autonomy" through its "Lane Following Assist" technology and Kia adds that a comprehensive range of advanced driver assistance systems will be available for the vehicle. A new Lane Following Assist system will allow the vehicle to autonomously control the steering, brakes and accelerator on the motorway, as well as being capable of changing lanes on its own. In addition to ICE-only offerings, which range from the 1.0 T-GDi to the U3 turbo diesel (a.k.a. 1.6-liter CRDi), Kia also plans to electrify the newcomer to a great degree.

An optional heated windscreen is available - the first time this technology has featured in a Kia. It detects road markings to keep the Ceed in its lane on the motorway, and controls acceleration, braking and steering depending on the convoy of vehicles in front.

Other features include blind-spot monitoring, rear traffic collision warning, parking assist and pedestrian detection.
