Intel put on an Olympic light show with 1218 drones

Fireworks over the Pyeongchang Olympic Stadium in South Korea

Instead, it was pre-recorded last December for broadcast during the event.

If you were watching the opening ceremony of the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea yesterday then you might have noticed a swarm of Intel-made drones lighting up the night sky at various points - and those intelligent packs of drones broke a Guinness World Record along the way.

A record-setting 1,218 drones shot into the sky and traveled to a nearby ski slope, first taking on the shape of a moving snowboarder and later rearranging themselves into the iconic interlocking five Olympic rings. Intel holds the current record after 500 drones were flown simultaneously for a light show in Krailling, Germany, on October 7, the spokeswoman said.

Per a report in Wired, while the scale of this year's show is certainly impressive, from a software perspective, it's more or less the same logistics as running smaller, 300-drone shows. Intel did have to make some minor tweaks to the designs of the drones' rotor cages to compensate for the colder and windier conditions in Pyeongchang.

Intel is the official drone partner of the Olympics.
