Google to mark all HTTP sites as 'not secure': HTTPS encryption explained

What is HTTPS encryption and why it’s critical

In layman's language, HTTPS is the protocol over which data between your computer and the website you're connected to is sent.

The last few years have seen Google pushing for more sites to adopt HTTPS encryption, and it will soon offer another incentive for them to make the transition. The new automated tool helps developers find which resources a site loads using HTTP, and which of those are ready to be upgraded to HTTPS simply by changing the subresource reference to the HTTPS version. For Chrome traffic on Android, that number is 68 percent.

Since then, a majority of websites has implemented HTTPS and the remaining is making progress towards that goal, said Chrome security product manager Emily Schechter, said in a blog Jan 8.

For instance, subsequent releases of Chrome began labeling HTTP pages as "not secure" when users where in Incognito mode or entered any data into a web page. 81 of the top 100 websites are now using HTTPS as their default connection method. Google will mark all such websites with not secure label at the address bar. This helps prevent an eavesdropper from sniffing out sensitive information, which is especially important when shopping online or accessing your bank account. Chrome users should now be discouraged from giving out their personal information when seeing the "not secure" tag.

"We kept having to redo the scene because he was so into being this creature that he was making all these noises", she said. Speaking to ET, Fergie has now said: "First off, I stand with victims everywhere no matter what genre, race, gender, age".

Starting with Chrome 68, due to hit the stable distribution channel on July 2018, visiting a website using an HTTP connection will prompt the message "Not secure" in the browser's omnibox - the display and input field that accepts both URLs and search queries.

Over the past two years, the company has been steadily adding "Not secure" alerts to the browser to flag web pages still on HTTP.

Google stated that not much would change for a majority of the web. The "S" means the connection is "secure" and that any communication between you and the website is encrypted and less prone to attack. However, Mozilla has not declared any deadline for this feature to activate in real life.
