This is What Happens When the US Government Shuts Down

Then-White House Chief Strategist Steve Bannon listens as President Donald Trump speaks during a meeting on cyber security in the Roosevelt Room of the White House in Washington Tuesday Jan. 31 2017

Republicans led by then-Speaker Newt Gingrich, intent on slashing the budget, forced a three-week shutdown in a bid to coerce President Bill Clinton to sign onto a balanced budget agreement.

In the last shutdown, about 850,000 federal employees were out of work and unpaid for 16 days.

Anyone traveling this weekend or in the foreseeable future could face roadblocks or inconveniences if the government shuts down - from national parks closing to delays at passport processing. Military members get paid on the 1st and 15th, so if a shutdown continued through February 1, US troops would not get paid The entire federal government doesn't shut downIn 1981, the Office of Management and Budget identified three "excepted activities" that will continue regardless of a shutdown: those "authorized by law", those that "protect life and property" and those "necessary to begin phasing out of other activities".

Government shutdowns are caused by the Congress and the President not coming to terms on legislation funding government operations and agencies.

The difference is those in the military and government-employed civilians, who will still go to work as usual but will probably not be paid until the government reopens.

The constitution allows lawmakers to get paid during a shutdown. So the troops just received a paycheck, and they wouldn't be due for another one until February 1.

That means military personnel would not suffer a lapse in pay unless a government shutdown lasted until the end of the month - or longer.

If the shutdown occurs, as many as 2.8 million federal government employees could be furloughed without pay and with no guarantee that they will be paid if they were not furloughed immediately when the shutdown began. No more unsafe Lottery. The Social Security Administration would not only send out benefits but would continue to take applications - though replacements for lost Social Security cards would have to wait.

Without an agreement on a continuing resolution by Friday, the government will not be authorized to spend any money, prompting a government shutdown.

That is, unless the Secretary of the Interior can come up with a plan to keep them open during the furlough. "Congress is playing chicken right up to the wire, and members need to be prepared for it". I worked primarily to get funding for projects, which meant I lobbied the Appropriations Committee.

And the US Postal Service won't stop serving residents - you'll still get your mail.

According to the Los Angeles Times, offices overseas that issue foreign travel visas to those wanting to come to the US will be closed, resulting in potential delays in visa processing.

The plan also emphasizes that park roads leading in and out of the parks will be closed and access will be denied "wherever possible". All of those taxpayer-funded sites would be closed during a shutdown. There is no threat (at least not yet) this time that the United States may fail to pay interest on the national debt.

Essential services, such as Social Security, air traffic control, and the Transportation Security Administration, will continue to be funded even if some employees of those agencies are not.

The White House, Congress, federal courts and the Veterans Administration will all continue to operate.
