Of course Chicago made Amazon's short list for HQ2. But now what?

Michelle & Chris Gerard

"We would have loved to have made it into the next round for Amazon's second headquarters, but everyone here is incredibly proud of the proposal we submitted", Duggan said in a statement Thursday after not being listed among 20 cities still being considered.

It would have been astounding - not to mention embarrassing - if the city didn't make the cut. The most insightful predications come from Sperling's Best Places, where analysts, in assessing Amazon's public (and potential private) criteria have scored Atlanta and Georgia in joint first place.

Amazon's finalist list leans heavily on the South and the East, particularly the Northeast.

Snyder has also made it a mission of his a year ago in office to boost talent development in MI, which could help attract companies to the region.

Amazon released a list of city finalists for its second North American headquarters on January 18, 2018. In Seattle, the company has contributed $43 million to the city's public transportation system as a benefit for employees. The company has been blamed for sopping up Seattle's available commercial properties, straining the local infrastructure and raising the prices of everyday living.

Mayor Ras Baraka believes his city has a real shot at winning over Amazon.

While there's a strong business case to be made, this is Chicago after all, so anything could happen to rattle the delicate Amazon bidding process.

Of course Chicago made Amazon's short list for HQ2. But now what?

Despite the result for Winnipeg, the exercise of putting together a bid served to make many business and community leaders realize how much the city has to offer.

Some in Canada's technology sector are pumping the brakes on any celebrations Toronto might be planning for making the Amazon HQ2 shortlist.

That level of promised economic impact has drawn many state and local governments to craft proposals that would give Amazon rich packages of concessions-in many cases, proposals that have. It will take several years for Amazon to build out what it envisions - 50,000 jobs and 8 million square feet of office space. Maybe that's true. But the e-commerce behemoth sure has a huge appetite for government-backed perks.

The proposal didn't include any tax incentives.

"As a thriving city with a talented and diverse workforce, culture of innovation and opportunity for all, I see no better city than Boston for Amazon to call their second home", Boston Mayor Marty Walsh said Thursday in a statement, per New England Cable News.

The Mesilla Valley Economic Alliance in Las Cruces and the Border Industrial Association in Santa Teresa, a small residential and large industrial area near El Paso's Upper Valley, submitted a proposal for Amazon's HQ2 to be put in a proposed Santa Teresa/San Jeronimo, Mexico, binational campus named Los Santos.

"Getting from 238 to 20 was very tough - all the proposals showed tremendous enthusiasm and creativity", said Amazon's Holly Sullivan. Amazon has said that it will announce a decision sometime next year.
