House approves month-long funding, Senate to vote on potential govt shutdown

Congress Likely Racing Toward a Government Shutdown

Voters have weighed in ahead of the looming government shutdown on who they will hold more responsible should lawmakers fail to pass a short-term funding bill.

But, Republicans had also included a six-year re-authorization of the Children's Health Insurance Program in their short-term spending package, a maneuver they'd hoped would pressure Democrats to avert a government shutdown. Unlike in the House though, Republicans in the Senate will need Democrats to pass the measure. The measure must get at least 60 Senate votes, which is a grim prospect because a handful of Republicans and a united Democratic caucus vow to vote no unless amnesty is granted to hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants whose parents brought them to the country when they were children.

The Senate was scheduled to vote on Friday, and if President Donald Trump is unable to sign the funding bill by 12.01 am on Saturday, it would result in the partial shutdown of the government.

Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer, responding to McConnell, said: "We all know what the problem is".

Senators sparred on the floor Thursday evening, but didn't get anywhere, according to ABC News. They could be deported in March if Congress doesn't pass an alternative to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA.

President trump claims the democrats don't want to avoid a shutdown because of the success of the recently-passed tax reform laws.

Kelly tells Fox that Trump has "very definitely changed his attitude" toward protecting the young immigrants, "and even the wall, once we briefed him". Chuck Schumer, D-New York, said.

A divided Republican caucus scrambled Wednesday to unify ahead of yet another looming government shutdown that could cost the US billions of dollars each day it goes on without resolution. Most likely, they will vote on another short-term stopgap spending bill that will leave major policy disputes unresolved, continuing to punt issues further down field.

"Senator Schumer, do not shut down the government", Ryan said.

Congress has needed to extend current funding levels, while congressional leaders haggle over how much to raise spending on defense and domestic programs and whether to give protection from deportation to at least 690,000 undocumented immigrants brought to the USA as children.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell also appears frustrated by the president's lack of engagement and clarity.

"If Schumer does shut the government down, I can't tell if it's a one-day shutdown or a one-month shutdown", he added, trying to put the blame squarely on Democrats.

House passage came only after conservatives secured a promise from House Speaker Paul Ryan that he would soon advance some type of legislation to bolster us military readiness, said Republican Representative Mark Meadows. And it was Trump who, last Thursday, scuttled a deal on immigration with his "shithole" comment, which has left members of both parties scrambling.
