Government shuts down amid Senate disagreements

Congress Likely Racing Toward a Government Shutdown

Although Trump met with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of NY to discuss the bill earlier Friday - at one point even appearing to reach an agreement - Schumer and the Oval Office ultimately failed to reach a consensus and that negotiation fell apart, the Times said.

"Senate Democrats own the Schumer Shutdown", the White House said, referring to Democratic Party's Chuck Schumer who is the Senate Minority leader.

The White House said it would not negotiate with the Democrats on immigration until the shutdown ended.

Less than two-and-a-half hours before a midnight deadline to reach a short-term deal to keep the federal government running at full capacity, Trump lashed out at Democrats.

But most federal workers won't be paid.

The stand-off also forced President Trump to cancel his planned departure on Air Force One to Mar-a-Lago on Friday afternoon.

"We've had an incredible failure of leadership", said Sen.

Democrats derided their Republican counterparts when they shut down the government during the Obama administration in 2013.

Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh afraid to go home
The statement said there had been "no change of attitude of the Myanmar government and its military toward Rohingya". Ali said the displacement of Rohingya people from Myanmar has soured relations between the two countries.

However Republicans then needed the support of at least 10 Democrats to pass the bill in the Senate. They have taken this step not because of any strong objection to provisions of the funding bill but because it omits a provision they want: an amnesty for illegal immigrants who came to our country as minors.

USA federal services and military operations deemed essential will continue, but thousands of government workers will be sent home without pay until the crisis is resolved. At the time, Trump told Fox & Friends that the ultimate blame for a shutdown lies at the top.

"The government shutdown is a sign of just how broken the Republican Party is", David Frum, senior editor of The Atlantic, recently told Salon.

SNELL: The Senate could decide that they have enough votes to pass what passed the House yesterday, and that would be a short-term continuing resolution to keep the government open at current spending levels until February 16.

The proposal now heads to the US Senate, where a 60 vote majority is needed before the midnight deadline to avert the shutdown.

The shutdown began at 12:01 am (local time) after a few Republicans joined Democrats in blocking the crucial measure would have provided short-term funding for the Pentagon and other federal agencies. Most cited the fact that the measure did not include a permanent solution for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) immigration program.

"What we just witnessed on the floor was a cynical decision by Democrats shoving aside millions of Americans for political games", Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said on the floor after the tally was certified.

The bipartisan Senate immigration deal Trump rejected would have boosted U.S. border security, including enhancing physical barriers along the U.S. -Mexico border, as the president has long demanded. Chuck Schumer emerged from a one-on-one with the president and suggested that progress had been made, but he admitted that they still have a ways to go.
