Tennys bounces Stan out of Open

Stan Wawrinka overcomes slow start & knee fears to move into round two

Former champion Stan Wawrinka wasn't sure if he was ready to play the Australian Open after left knee surgery previous year left his behind in his preparations.

The United States' Tennys Sandgren on Thursday defeated ninth seed Stan Wawrinka 6-2, 6-1, 6-4 to qualify for the third round of the Australian Open tennis tournament.

Stan Wawrinka feels great to be back after his first-round victory at the Australian Open on Tuesday but is still experiencing pain in the left knee that required surgery last season.

"The most important thing is that I could play my game not thinking about the ankle".

"As long as I enter on the court, and I don't feel any big injury, I'm not going to retire [from a match]".

"I only had surgery five months ago", Wawrinka told the Associated Press.

"My plan is to leave here and go back to practice, especially fitness-wise at the beginning", Wawrinka said of his future plans.

Over in the women's draw, and third seed Garbine Muguruza was the latest big name exit from the Australian Open as the Spaniard crashed out at the hands of Hsieh Su-Wei from Taiwan.

"I was watching this tournament with a box of Kleenex next to me sick".

Former champion Maria Sharapova, back on Rod Laver Arena for the first time since her doping ban, reached the third round with a 6-1 7-6 (4) victory over 14th seeded Latvian Anastasija Sevastova. "I've practised with him, played singles and doubles against him too so you have the information you need", Federer said of his German opponent. "So the focus was on me protecting my serve as well as I can and try to get a service break either by good defence or maybe he helps me out a little bit, and I think it was a bit of both".

Day four of the Australian Open saw the heat on the court prove to be a stumbling block for many competitors at Melbourne Park.
