Apple shuttle buses are being re-routed because several have been hit with unknown objects while driving on Interstate 280 in California recently. Above an image of an Apple commuter bus in 2014

Others think someone assaulted the bus with rocks or a BB gun, though the exact weapon is still unknown.

There was no word as to whether ridership on the chartered employee buses was down due to the incidents.

Major tech companies such as Apple and Google provide free shuttle services for their employees to transport them from San Francisco to their respective offices in Silicon Valley.

Officer Art Montiel, of the CHP, confirmed to Mashable that his agency is working with Apple to investigate, and that there have been several reports of an "unknown object" breaking shuttle windows. It could, of course, be rocks - but even rocks thrown at a moving vehicle on the highway could result in tragedy. However, no injuries have been reported.

The buses does not show any logos of the companies that hired them.

"If someone was targeting the buses I'm sure they are going to find them anywhere they go". They may have no signs on them, but people in the Bay Area recognize them as being used by tech companies.

The California Highway Patrol is investigating what caused windows to shatter Tuesday on five shuttle buses carrying employees from Google and Apple along the peninsula on Highway 280. An employee who talked to Mashable said that many shuttles have suffered from smashed windows. There have been four reports at least regarding broken windows on January 16 and January 12.

"There is nothing confirmed but it is suspected that a pellet gun might have been used in these incidents", Apple said in an internal email sent to all employees that was seen by The Guardian.

Subject: Coaches temporarily being reroutedDue to recent incidents of broken windows along the commute route, specifically on highway 280, we're re-routing coaches for the time being. This change in routes might add 30-45 minutes to commute time in each direction for some riders. Following the incidents, both the tech firms have rerouted employee buses keeping in mind the safety of their employees.
