Haitians Are No Longer Eligible for Temporary Work Visas in the US

Trump administration bars Haitians from temporary work visas KTNV

Donald Trump's administration is moving forward after his "shithole countries" comments to add policy to the insult and bar Haitians from getting certain types of visas.

Sarah Williamson, whose consultancy firm ran a pilot program to bring Haitians to the United States on seasonal work visas, told Reuters that although only a few dozen Haitians have used the visas each year since Haiti was added to the list, with this move, the Trump administration is "cutting off the most economically beneficial visa for the Haitian people". While it's unusual, countries are removed from the list at times.

Other than Haiti, Samoa and Belize were also removed from the list of countries eligible to apply for H-2A and H-2B visas, which are provided to seasonal workers in agriculture and other industries.

The announcement comes a week after U.S. President Donald Trump reportedly referred to Haiti as a "s--hole" country.

The decision to exclude Haiti may raise questions because it comes in the wake of the administration's decision to end Temporary Protected Status for almost 60,000 Haitians who have been living and working legally in the U.S. since the country's devastating quake in 2010. In the case of Belize the notice cites concerns over human trafficking and for Samoa it claims the Samoan government does not cooperate in accepting back their nationals once they've been ordered to leave the U.S.

What's more, they said, Haitians who do get the visas "have demonstrated high levels of fraud and abuse and a high rate of overstaying the terms of their H-2 admission".

However, though Democratic Senator Dick Durbin said Trump used the slur, Republican lawmakers, including Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, said they could not recall the word being used.

He thought this particular screening tool was "great" and "I wouldn't recommended doing anything beyond that", Jackson said. Jackson said the President sleeps only four to five hours a night but rarely sees the President overly stressed.

Approximately 40 percent of Haitians overstayed on a variety of non-immigrant US visas, including H-2As and H-2Bs, in the 2016 fiscal year, according to a DHS report. He defended and his relationship with Haiti in an interview with Reuters on Wednesday. "And they're very hard-working people", he said.

Advocates of the visa program say it allows Haitians to work legally in the USA and help contribute to natural disaster recovery efforts.

DHS's reason to ban Haitians from the visas does not hold up. On Wednesday, the Trump administration announced that Haiti will be barred from applying for low-skilled working visas.

For example, one worker-month of Haitian labor expands the US economy from $3,270-$4,140.

"The administration has made it clear that it sees no benefit from Haitian immigrants in the USA, and that's incorrect".

Only a few hundred Haitians work specifically under the H-2 category in the USA each year.
