$1.2M in wine bottles stolen from Hamptons collector

The FBI arrested the ex-personal assistant of Goldman Sachs' co-President David Solomon in Los Angeles Tuesday for allegedly stealing $1.2 million of rare wine from his former boss, according to a release from the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of NY.

Between 2014 and October 2016, he stole hundreds of bottles of wine worth more than US$1.2 million from his boss's collection, using an alias to sell the pilfered wine to a North Carolina-based dealer, prosecutors said. Standard 750-milliliter bottles at that price - nearly $20,000 apiece - would sit near the very top of the wine-auction stratosphere.

The assistant-from-hell allegedly re-routed some pricey bottles to a wine dealer in North Carolina, and is confirmed to have taken seven bottles of Domaine de la Romanee-Conti - worth almost $20,000 a pop.

The victim of the alleged theft was David Solomon, president and co-chief operating officer of Goldman Sachs, according to Bloomberg, the information provider.

He also told the lawmakers that he "ordered" the six-month extension of DACA protections. That means spouses and children, but not parents, he said.

Among hundreds of stolen bottles were vintages "from the French estate Domaine de la Romanee-Conti", according to the indictment.

"The theft was discovered in the fall of 2016 and reported to law enforcement at that time", said Andrew Williams, a spokesman for Goldman Sachs, in an email. The seven bottles of Domaine de la Romanee-Conti were stolen in October 2016, prosecutors say, and had previously been purchased for $133,650. "It's the wine that wine lovers want to own".

During De-Meyer's eight years working for Solomon as an executive assistant, according to the indictment, one of his responsibilities involved waiting for wine deliveries at Solomon's apartment in Manhattan.
