We are not a 'shithole country'

Donald Trump says he's 'not a racist' after row over African 's***hole' comments

Africans have reacted angrily after US President Donald Trump reportedly referred to their nations as "shithole countries", with many accusing the US president of racism and ignorance.

Republican Sens. Tom Cotton and David Perdue, who've been close allies to the president on the issue of immigration, were in a White House meeting with him Thursday when Trump, according to sources, expressed frustration with people coming to the USA from "sh-hole countries".

The Republican president sought to walk back comments he reportedly made to senators on Thursday at the meeting, saying, "The language used by me at the DACA meeting was tough, but this was not the language used". When Trump a year ago ended the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program - known as DACA - he challenged Congress to come up with a permanent fix by March 5.

The African ambassadors issued the statement late Friday following an emergency meeting after Trump used vulgar language to reject an immigration bill, asking why the US would take in more people from Haiti and "shithole countries" in Africa.

Trump later went on to argue: "Never said anything derogatory about Haitians other than Haiti is, obviously, a very poor and troubled country".

"Made up by Dems", he tweeted. I've always believed that America is an idea, not defined by its people but by its ideals. Haiti had a little thing called an quake, for example. After an emergency meeting today at UN, Africa group says it "is extremely appalled at...outrageous and xenophobic remarks" attributed to Trump and "demands a retraction and an apology". The Post included El Salvador.

He said that Trump and Carson, the lone African-American member of the Cabinet, were talking about the fallout from Thursday's vulgar remarks when Trump turned to him and said, "I am not the person that the media is making me out to be".

The State Department appeared to have gone into damage-repair mode. "Haitians should not be seen as a bunch of immigrants who come to the United States to exploit US resources".

Trump said Durbin and Graham - two seasoned lawmakers - should come to the White House for a meeting at noon.

But he kept up criticism of a Senate immigration plan that he said would force the United States to admit people from countries that "are doing badly".

"The solution to our current divisiveness does not live in the White House".

But the president has to know that even if video footage of the comment existed, there wouldn't be any political consequences for him.

Trump's latest comments also provided ample fodder for talkshow hosts.

Ben Marter, a spokesman for Durbin, did not provide details of the conversation but said the senator was "encouraged" by Trump's reaction.

The White House determines what data will be released from the exam. Trump is not compelled to release any information, and there is no template for the presidential exam. Jackson is expected to take questions about the results from reporters on Tuesday.

Trump made the remark in a meeting as Sen.

Biden apologized after a 2007 comment where he said of then-Senator Barack Obama: 'I mean, you got the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy. The White House did not deny his remark but issued a statement saying Trump supports immigration policies that welcome "those who can contribute to our society".

"The only thing that would attract me to emigrate to the USA is your vibrant multicultural society".
