University of Calgary says it's 'not safe' for Connor Neurauter on campus

The school's policy on sexual violence says students and staff "alleged to have perpetrated sexual violence may be subject to the University's administrative processes and discipline systems in addition to the civil or criminal legal system".

Neurauter is a sophomore at the University of Calgary, studying chemistry.

The University of Calgary could not expel Neurauter since the incident happened before he was in college.

The university was thrown into the controversy after a B.C. judge on January 4 sentenced the man to 90 days in jail for a single count of sexual interference involving a 13-year-old girl, but also ruled he can serve the remainder of it starting May 4, after finishing his semester at the U of C.

But for now, the U of C has no way to outright expel Neurauter, since he wasn't a student when he committed the 2016 offence.

Because Neurauter hasn't been expelled he could continue his course work, although the details haven't been worked out. "We're working on figuring this out".

His mother, Susan Neurauter, said the university asked him to stay off campus, in part for his own safety. Marshall was asked if Neurauter has indicated whether he's thinking of changing universities.

"I said this is because of you, because of you standing up", she told CBC.

Marshall told reporters in a conference call Friday that Neurauter's presence might be triggering for students, including those who experienced sexual violence in the past. "We know that victims of sexual violence may have been triggered by this incident and we're also anxious about [Neurauter's] safety", said Marshall.

He said Neurauter has not been on campus since Tuesday, and has been advised not to return for the remainder of the term. "And if there is, then there's a pretty high responsibility on the school to do something that would minimize that risk for everyone", he said.

"There have been discussions on social media, there have been no direct threats that the university has received, other than what we have read in the public domain", said Marshall.

"The university is reviewing the situation".

Marshall suggested perhaps it's time Canadian universities come together as a collective to ensure the safety and security of students across the country.

"We love and support our son". This has been a nightmare for our family, one that none of us, but particularly our children, are equipped to handle.

But the university said Thursday that Neurauter won't be expelled. It has gathered more than 50,000 signatures.

A petition that's collected nearly 60,000 signatures in four days is calling for his expulsion.

Kaitlyn Casswell, who started the petition, questions the university's decision against expulsion.

"He didn't rape anyone", she said.

"We spent considerable time developing that policy with considerable student involvement in particular".

She said that action would be taken to protect students, faculty and Neurauter.

"This is a product of a culture that we live in that doesn't tend to respond adequately to acts of sexual violence", she said. Instead, he'll be able to serve the sentence intermittently, the CBC reported.
