Tunisia president meets employers, unions after unrest

Tunisians shout slogans during a demonstration in Tunis over price hikes and austerity measures

Tunisian authorities say the number of people detained in the wave of violent protests to sweep the country since Monday has risen to almost 800.

The government will increase aid for poor families and needy people such as pensioners by 170 million dinars ($70.3 million), Mohamed Trabelsi, minister of social affairs, told reporters.

The source, speaking to Reuters, did not provide more details, but it comes as Tunisian President Beji Caid Essebsi met with political parties, unions and employers to discuss ways of overcoming the unrest triggered by austerity measures aimed at cutting a budget deficit.

On Friday, police used tear gas to disperse a crowd of demonstrators protesting in the Tunisian city of Sidi Bouzid, considered the epicenter of the Arab Spring in 2011.

In response to the austerity measures imposed by the government's new Finance Act, Tunisian protesters are expected to come out in force today in Tunis.

In a written statement, Rupert Colville, spokesperson for the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, said authorities must ensure that people are not arrested in an arbitrary manner and that their rights are respected.

The protests draw on anger over price and tax increases included in this year's budget that took effect on January 1.

A man in his 40s died in unrest on Monday night in the northern town of Tebourba though police have insisted they did not kill him. Prices have increased for fuel and some consumer goods, while taxes on cars and other items have also gone up.

Interior Ministry spokesman Khelifa Chibani said 44 protesters were arrested for carrying weapons such as knives, setting government buildings on fire and robbing stores. Major Khalifa Chibani said arrests included 151 on Thursday, including in the capital, Tunis, Chibani told the state-run Tunis Africa Press Agency, or TAP.

Its democracy remains for the most part intact and a secular party now leads the government in coalition with a moderate Islamist group.

Tunisia's has been in economic crisis since 2011, when the Arab Spring uprising unseated the government. The unemployment rate at the end of previous year amounted to more than 15 percent, the annual inflation rate was 6.4 percent.
