Sizzling Bruins top Canadiens in shootout

Max Pacioretty and Brendan Gallagher

It took almost half the season for the Original Six foes to meet for the first time, but it was well worth the wait, with the Bruins claiming an entertaining 4-3 shootout win on Saturday.

David Krejci stormed back with an awesome effort to knot things up at 3-3 before the end of the second period, and it was in the third that the Black and Gold turned the pressure up on Carey Price, peppering Price for 10 shots at the halfway mark frame.

After both squads traded chances in overtime, Marchand ended the game in the fourth round - speeding in and beating Price off a low shot for the win.

There was a scary moment at 18:23 of the second period when a Zdeno Chara point shot hit Phillip Danault in the side of the head.

Danault was moving and speaking to medical staff before he left the ice, to an ovation from the Bell Centre crowd.

He was moving and conscious and was to be kept overnight in hospital. The players are still anxious about him, but the reports are good so far.

That was a relief for Chara, the big Bruins defenceman who owns one of the NHL's hardest shots.

"I wanted to make sure he was OK and was responding".

Danault went down with 1:37 left in the second period, and the teams were sent to the locker room after he left the ice.

Victor Mete, in his first game back after helping Canada win world junior championship gold, picked up an assist 3:22 into the game when the rebound of his point shot was tucked inside the post by Pacioretty.

Saturday's game had a plethora of scoring and physical play - the teams combined for 77 hits - so with the added pressure of important playoff implications, things only will get more entertaining in a rivalry that never lacks exhilaration, regardless of circumstance. The Canadiens regained the lead when Galchenyuk scored a power-play goal at 8:51.

However, David Krejci tied the game 3-3 at 17:42 in the middle frame.

And as the ice tilted back in Montreal's favor, it was Rask that once again stood tall in overtime and into the shootout, with 16-straight saves following the Galchenyuk goal, including five in overtime and stops on all but one of the Canadiens' shootout attempts.
