Power Blackout at Las Vegas Convention Center Impacts CES

Power outage at CES leaves parts of Las Vegas Convention Center in the dark

Follow CNET's live coverage of day two of CES here.

A major power outage at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2018 in Las Vegas on Wednesday (10 January), left the world's largest annual consumer tech trade show in the dark for almost two hours.

Heavy rainfall caused the rare power interruption, as Las Vegas experienced an unusually heavy downpour that also caused flooding in some of the booths at the CES, including Google's. Intel, the company behind Energizer, and even Oreo joined in.

The Consumer Technology Association issued a statement saying that Nevada Energy has addressed the cause of the problem, which resulted in an outage impacting the sprawling Central and South halls.

"Today at approximately 11:15 AM (PST), the Central Hall and South Hall bridge meeting rooms at the Las Vegas Convention Center lost power".

One convention center employee who asked not to be identified said he has worked at CES for 10 years and had never seen anything like this outage.

University of Calgary says it's 'not safe' for Connor Neurauter on campus
But for now, the U of C has no way to outright expel Neurauter, since he wasn't a student when he committed the 2016 offence. This has been a nightmare for our family, one that none of us, but particularly our children, are equipped to handle.

"The outage is a bit ironic, given CES' status as one of the world's biggest technology conferences", according to Geek Wire.

L O L! Intel, Sony and OREO even got in on the fun and chose to let some tweets fly in light of the situation.

Some companies latched onto the outage as an advertising opportunity.

"Power goes out at CES?".

Many attendees admitted immediately that when the lights went off with a small pop, their first thought was terrorism, while others discussed the irony of a high-tech exposition knocked low by fundamental electrical technology. As a result, numerous devices that were being showcased at CES 2018 were not visible enough for media coverage.

"Someone told Alexa to turn off the lights", one person simply wrote.
