Farage has salary slashed to recoup 'misspent funds'

A snap Com Res poll carried out yesterday in the wake of Nigel Farage's call for a second Brexit referendum found that 51 per cent of voters do not want the contest re-run

As Farage has reportedly failed to provide proof of Adams' work as parliamentary assistant, the European Union is now docking the Brexiteer's pre-tax monthly pay of €8,484 (US$10,328) per month in a bid to recoup the lost funds. But Adams was also appointed to work within the anti-EU UKIP party in Britain as national nominating officer with his salary coming from the EU funds.

"Tony Blair and Nigel Farage aren't two people I'd normally like to be put in a group with, but on this issue they are speaking sense".

Auditors investigated the role of Christopher Adams, hired by Mr Farage as an assistant, who was suspended past year over suspicions that his professional activities were not related to the European parliament.

However, one of the party's most senior figures, Roger Helmer, resigned last summer after an investigation demanded he repay £100,000. Helmer, who gave no explanation of his decision to stand down halfway through the parliamentary term, has always denied wrongdoing.

A spokesman for the Eeuroskeptic Europe of Freedom and Direct Democracy Group (EFDD) told the Independent: "There is a vindictive campaign by the European Parliament of selective persecution of Euroskeptic MEPs, parties and groups". They dismissed the salary cut as a "politically-motivated assault".

Farage has the right to appeal at the European Court of Justice.

"Parliament pays salaries to assistants of lawmakers for work directly related to their European mandate", a European Parliament spokeswoman said.

The Guardian writes that Farage will not leave the Parliament portionless.

"For perhaps the first time in his life, Nigel Farage is making a valid point", said Labour MP Chuka Umunna, a leading supporter of the pro-EU Open Britain campaign group.

In 2016 a Ukip-dominated group was denied €501,000 in EU funds after it emerged European money had been funnelled into the attempts to win Farage a seat in the 2015 United Kingdom general election.

The former city banker lives in a multi-million-pound townhouse in London's Chelsea district and has been paid a salary as an MEP since 1999.
