Bernice King Says Trump's Racist Comments Are 'Troubling To Our Humanity'

Why no one should believe Trump's 'shithole countries' denial

Trump on Friday claimed on Twitter that he didn't use the language attributed to him about Haitians, but neither he nor the White House has directly denied his comments on African countries.

"The language used by me at the DACA meeting was tough, but this was not the language used", Trump insisted in a series of Friday morning tweets. Lindsey Graham broke his public silence.

US President Donald Trump sought yesterday to quell a global firestorm over his reported denunciation of immigration from "sh**hole countries" - a slur slammed at home and overseas as racist.

Trump denied he ever said "anything derogatory" about the people of Haiti. "Never said 'take them out.' Made up by Dems". "I have a wonderful relationship with Haitians!"

Mr. Clinton's post reads: "Eight years ago today in Haiti, the natural disaster claimed more than 220,000 lives".

The African group of ambassadors to the United Nations have issued an extraordinary statement condemning the "outrageous, racist and xenophobic remarks" by U.S. president Donald Trump, and demanded a retraction and apology.

Both took to social media, where they blasted Trump's remarks. Richard Durbin of IL, the lone Democrat present in the Oval Office at the time, said Trump's denial was false and the president had said things that were "hate-filled, vile and racist".

"You can not dismiss entire countries and continents as "s***holes" whose entire populations, who are not white, are therefore not welcome", Rupert Colville, spokesman for the United Nations human rights office, told reporters in Geneva. "The President will only accept an immigration deal that adequately addresses the visa lottery system and chain migration, two programs that hurt our economy and allow terrorists into our country".

"He lacked any sense of self-control or the a sense of propriety that is needed for the office of the President of the United States".

While many Republican lawmakers stayed quiet on Trump's remarks, Paul Ryan, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, called them "unfortunate" and "unhelpful", noting in an interview on CNN that his family had emigrated to the United States from Ireland to help build the nation's railroads.

Colville added that the story wasn't "just a story about vulgar language, it's about opening the door to humanity's worst side". Espaillat immigrated to the United States from the Dominican Republic, located next to Haiti on the island of Hispaniola.

Durbin said Friday that he had hoped for White House approval of the bipartisan deal.

The comments revived charges that Trump is racist and roiled already tenuous immigration talks that included discussion of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA. The president and his allies have said the US should move to a "merit-based" system rather than admitting people based on family ties, referring to anyone but spouses and minor children as "extended family".

Trump ignored shouted questions about his comments as he signed a proclamation Friday honoring Martin Luther King Jr. It had sought clarification from the U.S. envoy as to whether Botswana was on the list of African nations Trump would include in his slur, which the White House did not deny he made, "given that there are Botswana nationals residing in the United States".

Trump's comments were allegedly made on Thursday at a White House meeting with lawmakers on immigration reform.

Haiti's ambassador to the US, Paul Altidor, said on Friday the president's reported remarks were particularly unwelcome coming on the eighth anniversary of the quake which killed more than 200,000 people on the Caribbean island.

Some Republicans were also unhappy.

"The AU mission condemns the statement in the strongest terms and demands a retraction of the comment as well as an apology to not only the Africans but to all people of African descent across the globe".
