Who Is Edgar Ray Killen? Klansman, 'Mississippi Burning' Perpetrator Dies In Prison

A KKK member responsible for the 1964 murder of three civil rights workers in MS has died while serving a 60-year-sentence for manslaughter, the Clarion Ledger reports.

Killen, who would have turned 93 on Jan.17, was pronounced dead at the hospital at the Mississippi State Penitentiary at 9 p.m. Thursday.

Edgar Ray Killen, a part-time Baptist minister and the plot leader, was convicted of three counts of manslaughter almost 13 years ago.

James Chaney, Andrew Goodman and Michael Schwerner initially went missing after being arrested by local police and then released.

It also inspired the Oscar-winning 1988 film "Mississippi Burning".

Their bodies were found 44 days later, buried in an earthen dam, after an extensive FBI investigation.

Trump Expands Offshore Drilling in "Assault" on Biodiversity and Coastal & Indigenous Communities
The phone call came days after Zinke agreed to exempt Florida from a new Trump administration proposal to expand oil and gas drilling off most of the USA coastline.

He was found guilty of three counts of manslaughter on June 21, 2005, the forty-first anniversary of the crime.

The cause and manner of death are pending an autopsy. It was not until 2005 that Killen was charged with murder by a grand jury after new information related the case emerged.

Seven were convicted, including Sam Bowers Leader of the Mississippi KKK.

"Mississippi authorities reopened the case after finding out Sam Bowers said the main instigator had gotten away with murder and that was Edgar Ray Killen As we reported about that they reopened the case", according to Michell.

He was sentenced to 60 years in prison.

In 2010, federal authorities reopened the investigation in search of evidence to allow them to convict the remaining suspects.
