Before dawn on January 10, US immigration agents raided almost 100 7-Eleven convenience stores, arresting 21 people.

Seven 7-Eleven stores in Maryland were caught up in a nationwide raid Wednesday that immigration officials described as the largest such effort against an employer under the Trump administration.

7-Eleven, in a statement, sought to distance itself from the hiring practices of store owners. In fact, the acting head of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency said that Wednesday's raids were created to send a clear message to businesses not to hire unauthorized workers. ICE will continue its efforts to protect jobs for American workers by eliminating unfair competitive advantages for companies that exploit illegal immigration.

An ICE agent told the Washington Post that the company has three days to provide the legal documents of those arrested.

"We've already increased the number of inspections and worksite operations, you're going to see that significantly increase this next fiscal year".

ICE called Wednesday's sweep a follow-up to the 2013 raid that prompted the arrests of nine 7-Eleven franchise owners and managers, as CSNews Online previously reported. A notice of inspection alerts business owners that ICE is going to audit their hiring records to determine whether or not they are in compliance with the law. It's easy to blame the president alone for the increase in immigrant arrests, but that increase doesn't tell the whole story: Trump's spike a year ago still didn't come close to topping the peak reached under Barack Obama.

Several have pleaded guilty and forfeited their franchises, and have been ordered to pay millions of dollars in back wages owed to the workers. "We need to make sure that employers are on notice that we are going to come out and ensure that they're being compliant".
