Turkey warns citizens against United States travel over security

U.S.-Turkey relations deteriorate due to new travel directives

Turkey's Foreign Ministry has warned that its citizens traveling to the United States face the risk of arbitrary arrest.

The move follows a US State Department advisory on Wednesday which urged Americans to reconsider visiting Turkey due to security concerns.

The warning published on the official website said: "It has been observed that there have been increasing cases of terror and violent acts in the United States".

Relations between the two North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies have become increasingly strained over a number of issues, including Turkey's detention of two Turkish employees of U.S. diplomatic missions in the country.

Turkey summons U.S. charge d'affaires over Syria: Turkish sources
Turkey entered the war in Syria on the U.S.'s side, but has grown increasingly distant over US support for Kurdish militants. Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan speaks during a meeting at the Presidential Palace in Ankara, Turkey, January 10, 2018.

The two North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies have seen their ties deteriorate since a coup attempt in 2016 that the Turkish government blames on US -based Muslim preacher Fethullah Gülen.

In return, the Turkish foreign ministry said Turkish public sector employees in the U.S. had been detained on "baseless allegations".

The move came after the United States announced a new travel advisory on Wednesday and named Turkey as a country with an "increased security risk" along with Sudan, Pakistan and Guatemala. There are also tensions over charges against several Turks accused of helping a Turkish-Iranian gold trader evade USA sanctions on Iran, and US support for Kurdish groups in Syria that Turkey considers to be terrorist organizations.
