Trump lawyer Cohen sues BuzzFeed, Fusion over dossier allegations

The author of the explosive pre-election dossier on Donald Trump reported to the Federal Bureau of Investigation in July 2016 that he was concerned Trump was being blackmailed by the Kremlin, according to testimony by Glenn Simpson, co-founder of Fusion GPS, the company that commissioned the report.

It is laughable that Trump would suggest that Dianne Feinstein, who is cautious to a fault would do anything sneaky, underhanded, or illegal. "Must have tough Primary!", President Trump wrote on Twitter.

Here are some highlights from the transcript released Tuesday of Glenn Simpson's testimony to the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Sen. Charles E. Grassley, R-Iowa, the committee chairman, criticized Feinstein's decision to release the transcript, saying she did not consult him first.

Republicans have attacked the credibility of Steele's dossier, which Democrats say is an effort to discredit the ongoing probe by special counsel Robert S. Mueller III into whether any Trump associates coordinated with Russian agents to interfere in the presidential election. There was no collusion, everybody including the Dems knows there was no collusion, & yet on and on it goes.

Senator Grassley said Feinstein's leak could have a chilling effect on other witnesses, who now may be more reluctant to testify if they fear it will be leaked to the press.

He also reiterated in another tweet that there was "no collusion" with Russian Federation, and called on Republicans to "finally take control".

In an op-ed piece published in The New York Times on January 2, Fusion GPS co-founders Glenn Simpson and Peter Fritsch write that: "We don't believe the Steele dossier was the trigger for the F.B.I.'s investigation into Russian meddling".

Eventually, Fusion GPS hired Christopher Steele, a former British spy who had worked in Russian Federation in the 1990s, to reach out to his sources there.

On Wednesday, CNN's Manu Raju got a reaction from the senator himself, who emphasized the "problems" Feinstein has created for the committee and the investigation.

"I made no statement to that effect", Feinstein said about being pressured.

"We'll see what happens", Mr. Trump said, arguing that if there is no evidence of collusion, "it seems unlikely that you would even have an interview".

Simpson, an expert on the former Soviet Union, said blackmail is common because "the Russians have cameras in all luxury hotel rooms".

"I've always been skeptical that the Judiciary Committee or the Intelligence Committee was going to keep Republicans and Democrats together on their own investigations".

The California Democrat said she made the transcript public because she felt the American people had the right to know what the firm's leaders said about a dossier of Russia-related information about Trump.

Several Republican-led committees are now probing whether the document formed the basis for the FBI's initial investigation into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential race.
