Trump admin grapples with rise in border crossing numbers it once touted

President Donald Trump's tweets were once again used against him in court, after a federal judge in California on Tuesday blocked his administration from phasing out the Obama-era program shielding young unauthorized immigrants from deportation.

Judge blocks DACA rescission; White House...

The judge did not rule on the merits of the case but said the plaintiffs would suffer irreparable harm if the Trump administration ended DACA before the legal dispute is resolved.

"The so-called bipartisan DACA deal presented yesterday to myself and a group of Republican Senators and Congressmen was a big step backwards", Trump tweeted.

That contradicted the Republican consensus that Dreamers' fate needed to be part of a broader immigration bill that would include some version of Trump's promised border wall and other immigration reforms.

California Attorney General Xavier Becerra brought the lawsuit together with the attorneys general for Maine, Maryland and Minnesota, as well as the University of California, DACA recipients and others.

Trump said in September he was scrapping the DACA program but delayed enforcement to give Congress six months - until March - to craft a lasting solution.

"Hold up on that, because we need to see how USCIS will renew their procedure and if the administration is going to appeal and the likelihood is, yes", Aguayo stated. In exchange, there would be some form of legal protections for the so-called DREAMers who came to the US illegally as children.

That meeting led to Trump's decision this week to task his trusted chief of staff John Kelly to play point on immigration as lawmakers debate a border wall and the fate of young people brought into the country illegally as children, a senior White House official told McClatchy.

But Heitkamp, who was not in Thursday's meeting, said she didn't believe Trump's comments "blew up" the negotiations.

Clearly, Congress should approve a legal resolution to the matter.

"You could take out of it whatever you wanted because he said so many contradictory things in the span of 55 minutes", he says.

"We're seeing business owners who have been here for 20 years having to be sent back to countries that they don't know", says Gomez.

"We are now in January and the Democrats' position has been that we are not going to fund the troops, we are not going to fund the national security needs of the country, we are not going fund all the federal workers until we get a DACA solution", said Short.

"I remember when they announced DACA, I felt like I had a objective", Azua said.

"But it also has to be a bill where we're able to secure our border".
