Rafa Benitez says Newcastle talking with agents over transfers

'Need to sell', 'Infuriating' – Newcastle fans fume over one man in clash v Swansea

Rafa Benitez says he's made it "clear" to Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley what he needs in the transfer window.

Asked if the club was any closer to a breakthrough, Benitez said: "I thought that we could sign a player this week, but we couldn't do it".

"Swansea also need new players but I don't know who they will be able to sign that could make a difference and, from the sounds of it, neither does their new manager Carlos Carvalhal".

Benitez would also like to sign a left-back and centre-forward this month, with Liverpool's Danny Ings still a live option in the latter position.

Progress on incoming signings remains painfully slow, with a loan deal for Chelsea midfielder Kenedy now the brightest prospect, and in the meantime the manager is concentrating only on today's home clash with Swansea and the task of easing the club further clear of the drop zone.

He said: "We can not sell players that are playing because we would have to replace them for better players and, in January, we would need a lot of money to convince players to come here".

"We have to think we will do something before January 31", said Benitez. We don't have any offers.

"But if somebody wants to buy, we'll see if the price is good for us and for the player". We need to strengthen certain positions. I am hopeful we will do something.

"We are talking with agents but can not push too much".

"We have to work with the names that we have and we have to try and do our best in the conditions we are working in".

Looking ahead to this weekend's crucial fixture against Swansea, Benitez says he is not expecting an easy game. They look quite organised, disciplined in defence and hard to breakdown. It will be a tough game for us. So if someone is coming and approaching us about them, then we have to consider that.
