Facebook shares sink as USA stocks add to records

The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 18.68 points, or 0.7 percent, to 2,786.24.

Shares of Facebook tumbled Friday after it announced an overhaul of its newsfeed, while USA stocks added to records following data showing higher retail sales in December.

The Nasdaq is up 124.50 points, or 1.7 percent. "This quarter may be a little messy because of the tax bill, but there's so much optimism, so much enthusiasm about earnings", says Michael Matousek, head trader at U.S. Global Investors.

Amazon (AMZN.O) rose 2.2 percent to breach $1,300 for the first time.

That helped the Dow Jones U.S. Airlines index up 2.25 percent.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose to an all-time high on Thursday as investors bet economic growth would pick up steam.

The S&P 500 posted 164 new 52-week highs and 12 new lows; the Nasdaq Composite recorded 222 new highs and 14 new lows.
