Community rallies for arrested Vermilion Parish teacher

Teacher Arrested at Board Meeting After Criticizing Boss’ Raise

Many say the violence shown in the video does not reflect what their community is really like. "Just show up. Just do something".

Hilts, who works as a school resource officer at J.H. Williams Middle School in Vermilion Parish, hasn't spoken publicly about the Monday arrest of Deyshia Hargrave.

After Hargrave, a Rene Rost Middle School teacher, posed another question, the city marshal on duty escorted her out of the meeting.

Hargrave was captured by the Abbeville Police Department however Abbeville city lawyer and prosecutor Ike Funderburk disclosed to KATC that subsequent to viewing the video, he won't arraign Hargrave. The teacher's union and the ACLU are investigating and two board members are complaining that the board treats women unfairly.

LaSalle was at a rally Thursday for Deyshia Hargrave, the teacher arrested Monday night after she questioned the superintendent's salary at a Vermilion Parish School Board meeting.

As Hargrave continued sharing her concerns, a city marshal hired by the school district removed her from the meeting. In a video statement on Wednesday, she said she was "appalled by this, and you should be, too". According to school board member Kibbie Pillette, Fontana then beckoned off-camera to the officer, who interrupted Hargrave while she was speaking and ordered her out.

Hargrave told NBC News she is owed an apology from the marshal who arrested her and from the superintendent. Criminal charges were not filed against Hilts or the other officer involved in the alleged incident, Leger said. She was released on bond.

Hargrave was ejected after School Board President Anthony Fontana tried to silence her questioning the superintendent's raise when teacher salaries haven't been increased in 10 years.

"Today my heart is broken for many reason but my will is not", she concluded. "But, when is a good time for a superintendent to get a raise?"

"The Constitution prohibits the government from punishing or retaliating against people for expressing their views, and the fact that a schoolteacher was arrested at a public meeting of the school board is especially troubling", she said. "However, a person has to follow the rules".

"He's a very good guy, he's a pastor, respectable citizen here, and is well-respected in the community", Puyau told the AP. It's what you want to hear and it's the truth. "I should have stood up [and said, ] 'Let her speak'". School officials said they've received numerous death threats in response for allowing the officer's handling of the instructor. "Please go to your local school board meetings". For those threats against them, more people were hurt. "It is not fair to our family", he said emotionally.

But that isn't the end of the incident, which was seen around the globe after the video went viral on social and mainstream media.

Can't see video below? "We're hoping that this brings about change that we can feel safe in asking questions and getting some answers", said one of Hargrave's colleagues, Jessica Riebel. They argued and at one point, the officer put his hand on Hargrave's arm. She replies that she was not resisting the arrest.
