Bangladeshi man pleads not guilty in NYC subway attack

When Manhattan Federal Judge Richard Sullivan asked Ullah his plea Ullah replied

Ullah, 27, faces a litany of charges in the December 11 bombing in an underground walkway connecting two subway lines beneath the Port Authority Bus terminal.

In this court room drawing, U.S. Marshals escort defendant Akayed Ullah, center, into court for his arraignment on charges that include providing material support to a terrorist organization and using a weapon of mass destruction, Thursday, Jan. 11, 2018 in NY. The attack was the third to hit New York City over the last 17 months.

The indictment comes almost a month after Ullah, 27, allegedly set off a pipe bomb in a subway passageway inside the Port Authority bus terminal during morning rush hour on December 11.

Ullah migrated from Bangladesh some six years ago on a family visa.

He is charged with material support of a terrorist organization, use of a weapon of mass destruction and four other related counts.

During Wednesday's indictment hearing, US Attorney Geoffrey Berman said the selection of time and place has made it clear that Akayed's intention was to inflict as much damage as possible, and to strike fear into the hearts of New Yorkers in the name of Islamic State. He remains held without bail. Ullah was injured, and three others were slightly hurt. And she said he needed some of the dressing on his wounds changed.

The judge said she should make her requests first of prison authorities and return to the judge only if they don't respond.

Authorities said the device was built at Ullah's Brooklyn home, and that he'd stored materials like metal screws for shrapnel.

When Judge Richard Sullivan asked failed alleged suicide bomber Akayed Ullah for his plea, the suspect replied, "At this moment, not guilty".

Authorities said Ullah mentioned President Donald Trump in a Facebook post on the morning of the attack, which read, "Trump you failed to protect your nation". The president later demanded tightened immigration rules. "Ullah's alleged plot failed", U.S. Attorney Geoffrey S. Berman of the Southern District of NY said in a statement, referring to the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, or Daesh.
