Trump administration gets rid of voter fraud commission

On Wednesday, Trump suddenly disbanded the controversial commission he charged with investigating alleged voter fraud in May, saying legal challenges and resistance from the states prevented it from completing its task.

The commission managed to meet exactly twice (one of those meetings was in New Hampshire), but during its brief and contentious history was the subject of at least eight lawsuits - some aimed at halting its requests for intrusive data and others for its lack of transparency.

Kansas Secretary of State and vice-chair of the commission Kris Kobach said every time an alien votes it cancels out the vote of a US citizen. Kobach insisted he is not disappointed by the president's decision, as Homeland Security will continue the work. She has repeatedly said that voter fraud isn't a widespread problem, which Trump, a Republican, has claimed.

Of course, proving election fraud was never the end goal for Kobach, who has put in place in Kansas the most restrictive voter registration and identification laws in the country.

Trump won the election because he garnered more state electoral college votes, but lost the popular vote by around three million votes.

Padilla said voter identification requirements would serve to "disenfranchise the elderly, young, poor, and persons of color, who are less likely to have a government-issued ID". "System is rigged, must go to Voter I.D". "Virginia conducts fair, honest, and democratic elections, and there is no evidence of significant voter fraud in Virginia".

The Trump administration had faced opposition or limited cooperation from most states, when the commission controversially requested voter information, such as Social Security numbers and addresses. "It's now time to refocus on real threats to election integrity like foreign interference and cybersecurity".

Ohio's GOP secretary of state, Jon Husted, was also among almost half the states showing resistance, stressing that confidential information about voters "will not be provided to the commission".

Late last month, a USA appeals court gave the Trump voter fraud commission a minor victory, dismissing EPIC's lawsuit claiming the commission violated federal privacy protection requirements of the 2002 E-Government Act.

Kobach said even a handful of fraudulent votes is enough to decide close elections.
